About the Craftsman
I was born and raised in Kentucky. Even as a little kid, Jason enjoyed creating, building, and tearing things apart (though not always putting them back together). My woodworking experience began when I was a young kid. My dad, who is a self-proclaimed “Jack of All Trades, Master of None”, was the kind of dad who could fix anything. I looked up to my dad (and still do) and believed there wasn’t anything he couldn’t do. My dad has always been able to make things, fix things, and take things apart and put them back together (with no extra parts laying around). He enjoys woodworking as well and frequently turns pens and/or bottle stoppers to give as gifts. My dad always had various tools in his garage (upholstery, woodworking, auto, etc.) and was not only willing to let us (I have 4 sisters and a brother) use the tools, but he encouraged us to use them and learn how to operate them properly. With this background, he taught me to respect the machines we were learning to use, the proper use of the tools, and to be willing to try something new, even if it didn’t work out exactly right the first time. One of the machines he had in his garage was a ShopSmith Mark V, which included the lathe function. I remember going out to the wood pile, pulling a piece of firewood off the stack, chucking it up in the lathe and cutting on it until I was knee deep in shavings and there was barely anything left to turn. I never did make any “art” or heirlooms on that ShopSmith, but I think that is where my interest in woodworking was sparked. I also learned to use a Craftsman radial saw (which is now in my shop), a scroll saw, dremel, drill press, table saw, and other machinery, including a sewing machine!
My wife has always supported my passion for woodworking (she actually bought most of my first tools for me).
